VirtualDub can be used for recording you video and is compatible with the DivX codec (amongst many). Not only that, but once you have made your movie, you may well want to edit it, and VirtualDub is one of the best around for frame-by-frame editing, recoding, etc. Numerous filters are available on the internet (also freeware) which allow you to add in effects; for instance, you can easily place a logo to your recording as in the example above. Most importantly, VirtualDub is intuitive and relatively simple to use, which means you can edit your movies without first having to fight your was through a massive instruction manual first.

There are actually several versions of VirtualDub (e.g. VirtualDub, VirtualDubMod, VirtualDub MP3, VirtualDub MPEG2, NanoDub), explained by the huge variety of video and audio codecs in use; if one version does not seem to work with your video, another may well be successful.
