Backgound informationThe only software which is totally free is "Freeware". Conversely, software which is labelled as "Shareware" may be free initially, but is generally limited in function or time of use before is has to be purchased. Shareware is generally not expensive but is not free. The criteria for being included on this site is that the software should be totally free (and, of course, really useful), so we only list freeware programs. In some cases, freeware programs are free for personal use only. Be careful - many programs which are "free to download" are not freeware at all. Always read the small print! About meI am a Consultant Gynaecologist working at the Royal Free Hospital in London. I have had an interest in computers and computing for many years (my first computer was a BBC-B!). As most people, I regularly use standard commercial software for my work (word processing, databases, spreadsheets, etc). However, I have always been interested in alternative programs, and have built up a large library of free software through the years, some of which I use regularly. Demonstrating these programs to colleagues and seeing their reaction ("I didn't know you can do that", for instance), and not least, acceptance of a letter on the subject published in the medical journal, The Lancet*, were the impetus for this website. * Ten pieces of free software every doctor should have.
